Greg’s Books on Philosophy and Farming

Greg Burns, co-founder of Heritage Farm has used his experience starting the Farm and leading his family and written two books.

Growing A Heritage: Our Own Small Farm Story

Have you ever had a vision for living close to the land and working with your family on a small farm? Greg and Linda Burns did, yet were not willing to accept the worldly philosophies that typically go with the “back to the land” movement. This book details their story from pantheism to a God centered family and a real business.

A dream begun on a college campus in 1978 grew into the vision of working a small family farm, making a Christ centered home and witnessing to the world regarding the virtues of simple, Biblical living. The Burns’ have spent the last 29 years working toward fulfilling that God given call. In this book you will hear of their stories and struggles concerning salvation, marriage, family and starting a farm. Strategies that work toward sustainability and profitability on a small farm in today’s economy are examined. Some of the stories will make you laugh out loud; others will make you think about where you are in life and where God may be leading you. Most of all enjoy the book and let God lead you with His still small voice in peace and tranquility.

Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so He giveth His beloved sleep. Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is His reward. Psalm 127:1 – 3

Greg Burns was born and raised in suburban New Jersey just south of New York City. In spite of being bread a “suburbanite” he grew to love the land, the beauty of the natural world and a simple lifestyle in harmony with these. This personal passion started at a very young age in spite of only rarely seeing God’s creation apart from the over domineering influence of man.

Beginning at age 15 he raised a small vegetable garden at the family’s sub-division home. Today he operates a diversified farm of over 100 acres with his wife and children in the Alleghany Mountains of western PA. He also gives credit to the Creator of the universe not only for his own blessings but for showing us how to live in harmony with Him.

Meditations From The Land

From the most ancient memories of humankind, a strong love for the land has always resided deep down in man’s soul.  God put a desire in each of us for Himself and we more clearly see him when we are removed from the clamor and clutter of people.  We are attracted to the beauty, peace and purity of woodlands, meadows, small farms and open fields.  Even though we build cities, our souls crave the natural, be it onnly in the form of open space and parks.  God put this in each of us so that we might be drawn into relationship with Him.  His message, however, goes beyond and is deeper than His created world.  The purpose of this book is to convey some of that wisdom using lessons drawn from the simplicity of working the land combined with the timeless principles of scripture.  Enjoy the meditations and let our Lord lead you ever deeper in Him.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.  Psalm 19:1 – 2
